Part I
Many people consider pestilence as nature’s way of evening the score. Unfortunately, life, even if it is considered to be a game, has much more at stake then a neighborhood game of kickball. No man, woman, or child is ever more in touch with themselves then when they are faced with the ultimate question of survival. Nature’s great game can bring out the best in people, but when left unchecked it can also bring out the worst.
Artemis came from a long line of educators, people who gave their lives to teach others. There is no mission more noble than teaching, at least there wasn’t in Artemis’ mind, and after he had spent a full lifetime learning, he knew exactly where his place was in the world. With a Doctorate completed in education and Master’s degrees in several other subjects, Artemis had decided he was finished with school. After residing in several different cities over the course of many years, he set out to find both a career and a place he could call home.
Mavis had been widowed very early in life. It was rather unfortunate when barely eighteen months into marriage that she lost her husband, who had been serving in the United States Navy at the time. Word came one day from the local base that her husband had been lost in an unfortunate accident. As they had yet to start a family, Mavis felt completely alone. She didn’t even stick around for details. She just gathered some of her belongings and left town, not knowing where she was going.
