In almost the amount of time it would take a ray of sunlight, magnified a thousand times, to split the backside of a beetle, Artemis managed to flip this encounter back in his favor. He of course realized that this man was only a lowly security guard and once he realized Artemis was a paying guest he would undoubtedly be more subservient. As if he had just been handed the baton in a relay, Artemis’ stronger side took hold and with the grace that only comes with confidence, he snatched his I.D. from the guard and turned his back to him.
As he spun around, the guard hesitated for a moment before deciding to open the gate for Artemis. He quickly recalled the scolding he got from his boss when he had detained a guest several weeks ago without any cause. Before the arm had fully risen, Artemis had already forcefully depressed the gas pedal, setting the tires screeching as they struggled to grasp the surface of the driveway. Nothing standing between himself and the front entrance to the resort, Artemis was only left to ponder what he was going to do first.
Artemis had this horrible inconsistency in his behavior. For he was entirely too smart for his own good. Undoubtedly an intellectual, he had a very difficult time slowing down his thoughts to a reasonable level. He never really spoke too much, but once he was engaged in conversation, there was no stopping him. Although he was not an expert on brain waves, he had always been interested in the type of all-or-none response of certain ones. Specifically those that fired when an interesting thought popped into his head.
