“What is it, Daddy?” Jessica called out to her father, instantly comforted by the sight of him.
“You’re okay!” Caleb smothered his daughter with a giant hug, relieved that she was back on her feet. “I thought I had lost you. There is no time to talk now. Something terrible has happened. We must ride back to the house straight away. Try to keep up with me.”
As he said this, Caleb raced towards his bike, mounted it and began peddling his tired old legs as fast as they would go. Jessica followed suit, mounting her small, pink bicycle and attaching her Hello Kitty helmet. The helmet had been a gift from her Aunt Mildred, who made her promise to never ride her bike without it.
Caleb had already made it several hundred feet down the dirt path when Jessica finally started pedaling. She pushed her eight year old legs as fast as they could go and began racing towards her father. The wind whipped through the holes in her helmet, creating a whistling sound. Caleb glanced back continually, making sure his daughter was still trailing behind him. Although he didn’t decrease his pace, somehow Jessica was able to catch right up to him and wink his way as she came up right along his side.
