Part XXVII:
“Well, I do suppose anything is possible,” Caleb offered. “But I was happy to have you take up the family business. The world does work in mysterious ways, but I am sure it was no more than a coincidence. I do feel terrible that you were caught up in this awful mess. Let me go and see if the police have caught the intruders.”
Caleb made his way out of his daughters bedroom and hopped down the stairs, taking two at a time. There were seventeen steps in all, so on the final step he sprang forward towards the front door, A police officer was waiting on the other side of the door, with his cap in his hand.
“Can I see your badge?” Caleb asked the officer. “Not that I would even know a real badge from a fake one, but I suppose it can’t hurt to be careful.
The man flipped open a small leather case and presented his credentials upon request. Caleb, not knowing what he was immediately looking for, propped the screen door open so the police officer could make his way inside.
“Please, do come in,” Caleb offered.
