“I am Officer Velmin,” the uniformed police officer calmly stated as he entered the house.”Is there somewhere we can sit so I can ask you a few questions?”
Caleb made his way towards the kitchen, with the officer following on his heels. The police officer was a bulky man, with his chest protruding behind his tight blue shirt. He was several inches taller than Caleb, which instantly caused Caleb to feel inferior. The officer’s calm demeanor helped him to feel at ease in the tense situation.
“First, I would like to let you know that we have caught the intruders,” Officer Velmin said as he sat down at the table. “Both of these men are repeat offenders and have been on our watch list for some time. I am pretty sure that with your testimony, they will be put away for some time. There is one disturbing thing about the whole fiasco. The men both kept telling me over and over again that they never meant to harm the little girl. Aside from being collateral damage, is the girl okay?”
“Although I am sure her life will never be the same after this incident,” Caleb spoke solemnly, “I expect she will not have any lasting physical effects.
As he said this, both men looked to the entrance of the kitchen and saw Jessica standing there, goggle-eyed. Having endured such great stress, she knew with certainty that the only thing she could do it at this point was find the inner resolve to overcome it.
