The first part of any journey can often set the tone for the whole trip. As was the case with Harjen, he was already mystified as he progressed further along the dimly lit path. An interesting characteristic of the beginning portion of the cavern was the way the light reflected along the walls. Harjen did not have a flashlight, or even a match, so the only available light source was the sun that had been slowly adjusting to the darkness.
The natural reaction of Harjen’s pupils to adjust to the current setting was the first stage in a long adjustment his body began to make in order to thrive in the muddle of dark. He could feel the silent movement of the tiny black holes of sight. As a camera shutters, the black circles became larger and larger, almost encompassing the full circumference of his retina.
Although the air below the ground was largely not circulated, it had a cool feeling to it that was particularly more noticeable to his nasal perception than that of his throat. The tiny capillaries of Harjen’s nose tingled with the air that brought with it a sensual satisfaction that began to raise his spirits. It was this that caused Harjen to stop and sit against a protruding rock to collect himself.
