My name is Jerrold. I am an aspiring musician. Better yet, it may be more accurate to say I am aspiring to be a musician. Oftentimes, I wish that I had started studying at a much younger age, when I may have been able to learn much more easily. Currently, I am almost 20 years old and I feel my age is working against me. As music is, in its simplest form, a language, it is probably best to begin learning to speak it as the brain is still developing.
Perhaps I never really believed in my own potential when I was coming of age. Or maybe I was just afraid of realizing a failure that would feel like quite a catastrophe. Either way, all the hours I spent listening to the same rock and roll albums over and over again did not provide me with the ability to speak musically. I do still wonder how infants begin speaking the language of their household almost natively, while music requires countless hours of training the body to interact in rhythm with the brain.
I have always been inspired by the bass guitar. This may be because of the legendary people I have enjoyed listening to or just because I long to be able to play on the backbeat. From my own subjective experience, I find that most people who listen to music can’t even identify the bass guitar, but it is the glue that keeps the music together. Perhaps the higher notes, which are carried by the bass notes, are just more noticeable to people that only listen to music on the surface.
