For most parents, there is little that they would not do for their offspring. Some parents have been known to find superhuman strength and do things as incredible as lifting a car momentarily to free their child. It is hard to argue that the natural attachment we have to our genetically similar creation controls us on a subconscious level. It is hard to fault Todd for caring so deeply for his son, but in so doing he not only endangered the public, but perpetuating Brett’s own sociopathic behavior.
Todd had dozed into an in between state of consciousness between sleep and wakefulness. William, walking by, his keys jingling from the holster on his belt, tapped on the iron bars with the ring on his finger. Todd was instantly started, rising with a burst of adrenaline. William couldn’t help but think that something was strange about this case.
“Your wife and son are already sitting outside the courtroom,” William spoke softly, “they have been here for an hour. In another hour, you will be called into the court. The judge is very prompt, so be prepared.”
“I suppose a puppy dog face won’t help me any?” Todd joked.
William did not answer this rebuke, but instead spun around and went about his business. The next hour dripped by, but passed without further to note.
