Shocked at the rapidity of the reply, Frankie takes a moment to collect his thoughts. After feeling sufficiently collected, his thoughts now begin to roam freely once again. He replies, “I am only looking for a few days, but any amount will do, really.”
“Have you decided yet on what you are willing to sacrifice in return for the time you have requested,” answers the shopkeeper, “and when you are willing to hand that over.”
The dangling sign out in front of the store where our story takes place simply states “Time for Sale – Inquire Within.” This may seem a rather odd thing to post on a sign hanging from a shop window, but there it is nonetheless. The years (34 to be exact) have frayed the edges of the red and yellow fabric and caused the previously black letters to appear a smoky shade of gray.
If Frankie’s resentment were a sharp knife, it surely would have reached out and stabbed the shopkeeper at this moment. Instead, Frankie stammered “B-b-but I was not p-prepared to m-m-make that decision today.”
